Classical Guitarist Catherine O’Kelly to Perform at Shirley Meeting House on Sept. 20

Versatile musical interpreter Catherine O’Kelly will perform at The Shirley Meeting House in Shirely, Mass., on Sunday, Sept. 20, in a program featuring works by Albéniz, Tárrega, Bach, Villa-Lobos and Walton.

Well-known both as a soloist and as a chamber music performer, Ms. O’Kelly has delighted audiences in New England for many years. A member of The Tedesco Duo with flutist Arielle Burke, Ms. O’Kelly earned her master’s in guitar performance at The Hartt School in West Hartford, Conn., where she is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree. She has performed in master classes with Jason Vieaux, Odair Assad, Sergio Assad, Andrew York and Vladimir Gorbach.

Ms. O’Kelly began learning classical guitar at the age of seven. She has studied with Richard Provost and received Suzuki training from David Madsen. A former Suzuki student herself, Catherine teaches most of her students through the Suzuki method.

Although she is best known mostly as a classical guitarist, Ms. O’Kelly is also an oboist, and has sung as a member of the Vassar College Women’s Chorus, which toured Spain in 2008.

The programs will include “Recuerdos de la Alhambra” by Francisco Tárrega (1852-1909); the “Lute Suite No. 3,” BWV 995, by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750); “Córdoba,” from “Chants d’Espagne” by Isaac Albéniz (1860-1909); selections from “Douze Etudes” by Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959); and “Five Bagatelles for Guitar” by William Walton (1902-83).

This event will take place at The Shirley Meeting House in Shirley on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 4 p.m. Please visit www.shirleymeetinghouse.org for more information.
