In an effort to assist our NYC Fitness client, we are posting their latest PR on our site.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New York, NY —Transform Fitness, one of New York City’s premier fitness and physical therapy centers, is very excited to announce a new device to identify “knee muscle imbalance” and benefit clients old and new: the MyoWave muscle assessment technology from SONOSTICS®.

Always on the look-out for better ways to serve its clients, Transform Fitness has recently contracted to provide a state-of-the-science technology, the MyoWave muscle assessment system. This new device employs ingenious new methods to determine “muscle imbalance,” problems with the relative strength or weakness of the muscles that support the knee.

SONOSTICS’ triumph was development of a way to non-invasively measure the strength of the knee muscles. This assessment allows the experienced trainers and physical therapists at Transform Fitness to prescribe just the right exercise regimen or general behavior modification to its clients who suffer from knee pain. This results in a tremendous boon for older clients, who are especially vulnerable to knee pain due to osteoarthritis (OA) or simply to basic day-to-day stress and strain on the overworked knee joint. Older people can now reap the benefits of reduced knee pain in terms of both basic quality of life and reduced risk of injury. Less pain in the knees of course means better mobility, better cardiovascular health, and above all less chance of potentially serious injuries from falls and other accidents common among older adults.

MyoWave makes minute, precise measurements of muscle effort as it registers on the surface of the skin. Much more expensive methods, such as CAT scans and MRIs, are no longer necessary. The device employs a small platform that simulates a step plus the electronic sensors that measure the energy of the muscles at work in the simple process of walking up a flight of stairs. The assessment can be completed in 15 to 20 minutes and generally costs only about $100 (and follow-up assessments are available at substantial discounts).

MyoWave was evaluated in a recent study published in the Journal of Biomedical Science and Engineering. While MyoWave is effective in detecting muscle imbalance in persons of all ages, the average age of the subjects who participated in the study was 71. The University of Binghamton (New York) research team captured data of special value to older adults suffering from osteoarthritis and patella femoral pain syndrome (PFPS), but also from normal stress and strain. About 75% of persons who suffer from knee pain appear to have no joint damage from osteoarthritis or from previous injury. This indicates that muscle imbalance is a widespread problem. The good news is that physical therapists using MyoWave can design exercise programs to strengthen specific muscles to correct the imbalance.

Transform Fitness is an established physical training facility with the requisite expertise to get the maximum benefit from the MyoWave assessment system. This cost-effective method adds up to tremendous benefits for Transform clients — reduced pain, improved range of motion, and lowered risk of injury. The system provides a “win-win” situation for older clients, and indeed clients of any age.
