New York, N.Y. — The New York City Olive Oil Coop is pleased to announce that it is taking pre-orders for the olio nuovo of the 2013 olive oil harvest.

The New York City Olive Oil Coop was founded by Michéal Castaldo in 2005. His relatives, the Pellegrino family, run the Coop’s grove in the province of Reggio Calabria, Italy. The olive oil is canned, then shipped to New York City, where it is carefully aliquotted into 500 Ml and 1000 Ml bottles.

The Olive Orchards were founded my Michéal’s great grandfather Giuseppe Frisina in 1906 after returning from America as a bird of passage. In the 1920s Michéal’s grandparents Michelangelo Pellegrino and Maria Antonia Frisina continued cultivating, producing and milling the olive oil. Today Michéal’s uncles the Pellegrinos produce organic olive oils in the foothills of Aspromonte, along the Tyrrhenian coast of Reggio Calabria, the “toe” of the “boot” of Italy. The family is the proprietor of over 20,000 olive trees, some of which are over 300 years old. Pellegrino farming methods comply with European Union certification bodies.

Pellegrino Certified Organic Oil has a brilliant dark green hue, the scent of green olive, a wonderful, buttery texture, and a subtle, peppery finish. The Pellegrino-produced Villetta Mimma Vittoria’s premium-quality, gourmet extra virgin olive oil is certified organic. It is unblended and has a natural acidity below 0.5 percent. The Pellegrinos’ farming techniques include modern irrigation systems, ensuring that this year, the trees are in excellent condition.

The Coop’s Olive Oil Tasting Feast (and pick-up of cans only) will take place on Thursday, Dec. 12, every hour on the hour from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. in midtown Manhattan (with a location TBD). The bottles will be available for pick-up after January 10, 2014. (Orders must be placed before October 31, 2013). The New York City Olive Oil Coop also has aged Balsamic Vinegar (25 years) available as well. The Balsamic Vinegar is stored in a barrel that Michéal’s father Pasquale Castaldo (a cooper) built over 50 years ago.

If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail the Coop at or call 212-947-7271. Visit the Coop’s website at www.NewYorkCityOliveOilCoop.com to learn more about the olive oil. Click on the “Order” tab to pre-order.
