Is your content effectively promoting your business?

It doesn’t matter whether you are writing for your website, social media, ads, articles, or other outlets, effective writing requires answering these key questions:

1. What does your audience want to know about? Do research. For example, subscribe to publications your target audience reads, set up Google alerts to monitor areas of interest to them, and use social media to “listen” to what topics they care about. That’s what you need to write about.

2. In what way can you offer something unique? Sales pitches are annoying. Dry factual recitations are uninteresting and available from multiple sources. Instead, offer your unique insights and analysis. Help people understand how something affects them and what they need to do to solve or minimize their problems.

3. What do you want to accomplish with your content? Are you trying to increase visibility, drive web traffic, or establish expertise in a specific area? Maybe you want to cross-sell services to existing clients or nurture a prospect to close the deal? Your content won’t be successful if it doesn’t take into account your goals.

Content is a valuable marketing tool when used strategically. If you take the time to understand what will appeal to your audience and focus on your objectives, your content will drive the success of your business.
