New York, NY - Through our NYC networking ventures we managed to meet this wonderfully artistic and deep photographer Gaetano Salvadore. We are huge fans and think you should be as well.

Native New Yorker Gaetano Salvadore found his love for photography through film. Since his father worked for Warner Communications, maybe it was inevitable that he would grow up appreciating the world of movies. But it was his first summer down in Mexico in his early 20’s that really sparked Mr. Salvadore’s zeal for photography. After returning to American soil, he immediately enrolled in classes at the Center for Media Arts in Chelsea and began assisting other photographers around the city.

Mr. Salvadore specializes in headshots, portraits and event photographs. He spent several years shooting concerts and other events. Thus far in his career, he has covered everything from the Rolling Stones’ first concert tour of mainland China to a belly-dancing sword swallower (a world-record holder, no less) to a recent natural child birth in a Brooklyn apartment. He also works with people who suffer from chronic illnesses, especially eating disorders and depression. His method combines traditional counseling with the medium of digital photography as a way to facilitate healing.

It goes without saying that people are Mr. Salvadore’s number one influence — their ideas, struggles and passions. “I’ve always been a great listener,” he says, “and, to me, that is one of the most important tools a photographer can have.”

You can find out more about Mr. Salvadore on his website, www.gaetanosalvadore.com.

New York, New YorkWe are big foodies here at Sitka Creations so we are thrilled to promote this website for our friend Micheal Castaldo, a true Italian with a taste for authentic Italian cuisine.

By now, I am sure you have heard or read about the enormous amount of health benefits that come from olive oil- a staple in both the Italian and Mediterranean diets. It is currently very difficult and pricey to buy TRUE extra virgin olive oil, considering that most of the brands you see on the super market shelves do not come close to the olive oil produced in typical Italian mills. This is why the New York City Olive Oil Coop was formed. They deliver Certified Organic Oil straight from the source, Micheal’s family-run mill in Calabria, Italy.

To purchase a 1 gallon can of Pellegrino Olive Oil or their famous Balsamic Vinegar for yourself or a loved one, visit their website at http://newyorkcityoliveoilcoop.com or email nycoocoop@gmail.com.

New York, NY – The cool temperatures of autumn have us already daydreaming about a vacation. We just got word from a friend of Sitka Creations, Janice Davis, with the latest about her new book. It’s all about villa travel. Vacation, anyone? Direct from her own synopsis:

Have you ever seen a movie or a TV drama that takes place in a lush Italian villa (or French chateau, Spanish castle or English manor house) and found yourself daydreaming of what it might be like to experience that lifestyle? Friends, a Villa & a Travel Bug by Janice Davis provides all the info you’ll need to plan a holiday with a large group of friends or family—in style and economically! Based on many years of experience renting luxurious and often historic European homes with groups of up to as many as twenty-seven friends, this book is a template for successful villa adventures. Every aspect of organizing such a holiday is covered, from how to locate your villa, to what factors you’ll need to weigh when making your selection, to dealing with pricing and figuring out who gets which room. Also included are travel basics (such as how to find the best air fare, how to pack efficiently, and how to beat jet lag) and anecdotes from her personal villa experiences.

Ms. Davis’ book is available on the Amazon and Barnes and Noble websites.

New York, NY – Nothing excites us more here at Sitka Creations then a reason to head into Manhattan for an old-fashioned film festival. After all, movies are meant to be seen on a theater screen, not an I-pod or computer.

If you are a film junkie and/or looking for something different to do this Fall make sure to check out the 31st Asbury Short Film Concert on Friday, November 18, 2011. This remarkable touring exhibition presents award-winning short films that have been carefully selected from US and international film festivals for your viewing pleasure. Highlights of this year’s annual showcase include The Lost Thing, a 2010 Oscar® winner for Best Animated Short Film and La Linea, recent winner of Audience Choice at the DC Shorts Film Festival. The purpose of this event is to showcase and celebrate these cinematic treasures in a real theater setting, as they were meant to be shown. So mark it down on your calendar and get ready to kick off the weekend with New York City’s longest-running short film exhibition at the NYIT Auditorium on Broadway (located at 1871 Broadway, at 62nd St., in Manhattan) at 7:30 p.m. on the 18th. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the Concert website at http://asburyshortsnyc.com or call 718-510-6929.

New York, NY — Sitka Creations is happy to have met New Jersey photographer Adriana Cruz through a photographer friend who will be the subject of a later article.

By Michala Smith

In the winter of 2006, Adriana Cruz visited the old farmhouse where her brother lives. She walked into the laundry room to get something and found herself mesmerized by the way the sunlight was hitting a vintage doorknob. She immediately dashed out of the room to grab her camera and started clicking away, without realizing that this was the moment that paved the way for her future career in photography. In the blink of an eye, Ms. Cruz was being approached about her rates. She responded by creating HereNorth Photography. HereNorth specializes in everything from weddings and couples to children and high fashion shoots, and her work does not stop after the picture has been taken. She is fully involved in the editing process, which may involve adjusting exposure, white balance, darkness, cropping, etc. She finds this post-production stage both interesting and pleasurable. Currently, Ms. Cruz lives in New Jersey and works throughout the tri-state area. Eventually, she would love to advance her career from her present part-time status to that of a full-time fashion photographer.

You can contact Ms. Cruz at herenorth@gmail.com and find more information on her website, www.herenorthphotography.com

New York, NY — Sitka Creations is happy to have met NYC artist Janet Restino through the American Business Women’s Association in NYC.

By Michala Smith

Philadelphia native Janet Restino came to New York in the early 1980′s. Throughout her career, she’s been a true “Jill of all trades.” Ms. Restino’s first love was music, which in turn ignited her passion for painting, drawing, sculpture, and photography. Her favorite subjects in the visual arts are nature and the human figure. Ms. Restino also finds the concept of “peace” an inspiration for her work; the birds, the sun shining, the grass growing, the quietness of a Sunday morning are all platforms for art in her eyes. She is also an accomplished composer. An avid songwriter, comic, poet, and singer, Ms. Restino has put on several shows in Manhattan; the last being at the Cherry Lane Theatre this past summer. In the visual arts, she loves to fuse together her media, combining poetry and song lyrics with her images. She prints and publishes many of her images on blank note cards, apparel and print using various methods such as lithography, woodcuts, etching and silkscreen. The discerning shopper will find her pieces around Manhattan, particularly in shops in the Theater District. Ms. Restino
describes herself as instinctual, intuitive, and sometimes impulsive—all of which are clearly evident in her dynamic and inspiring work.

You can email Ms. Restino at jrestino@nyc.rr.com and visit her site at www.janetrestino.com

Fortaleza, Brasil — Sitka Creations is happy to have been found by Brasilian artist Wilson Neto (and friends)

By Michala Smith

Mr. Neto is another export from Brasil that we Americans can be envious of. Wilson is a self-taught artist who has been hitting the art scene at full speed since 1996. With more than 20 exhibitions in both the United States and Brasil under his belt, he continues to take the art world by storm, using his own unique sense of style and his zest for the peculiar. He loves to twist popular works of art with his contemporary vision, spinning them right onto book covers, oil barrels, telephones, and postcards. Currently, he is continuing his study of the fusion of “high” art—work you’d see at galleries and museums—with “popular” art—familiar images from animated movies, advertising, comic books, and graphic novels. He is also making headway on how to use his craft on unique canvases. He works as an illustrator for several publications, including Cru-a magazine (an art journal from Portugal), Aldeota (a Brasilian magazine), and several Brasilian government publications and book covers. His colorful perception of art is proof that Wilson Neto is indeed in a league of his own.

Mr. Neto can be reached by email via his site wilsonneto.com.
